YOUR BUCK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT

PART OF YOUR PROGRAM

BBO CLASSIC REPEATER
(sire of our first Fullblood buck Auto Repeater)
A VERY good buck in his own right.
A strong brood doe band is essential on your path to success.

Regardless if you breed commercials, percentages or Fullbloods you need a strong group of girls to care for your future kids.

While looks pretty much only matter in the show ring, you need to still have girls that you like at home.  Remember when potential customers come to your farm they will mentally evaluate your herd.

Do they like what they see?
Is the herd as a whole under weight?
Does it seem like all the goats are scratching?
Are the goats kept in large pasture, dry lotted or kept in mud?

If you have people visit your farm, you want to make sure your goats look respectable. If there are limping, scratching, skinny goats, it would serve you better to quarantine those animals so it is obvious you have it under control.

Otherwise you look like an irresponsible goat breeder and caretaker.

When you look at your herd in the condition they are right now, would YOU buy one of your goats?

Learn what it is you like about goats:

Do you like wide standing goats or narrow?
Do you like goats with large hindquarters or small?
Do you like goats that have thick bones or thin?
Do your like goats that carry extra meat or more slender?

These questions I have asked myself. My herd is starting to take shape.  I am searching for those wide correct does.

Longer, straight backs and good rear end muscling.

You have to find your niche in the goat world. Figure out what you do and don't like. Strive to achieve it. Sure you may have a goat like "Pancake" who can pose very well for pictures,
but in reality is a really ugly girl.
She's here because she has qualities I like, but she's also already sold after she kids triplet doelings for me :)-
Pluses for Pancake:

Long body
Large feet
Stands wide in front
Long neck
Broad shoulders
Good front end muscling
decent bone
Good teats 1/1
Disbudded
Makes good amount of milk
Excellent Mother
Easy Keeper
Does Not get out of fences
Friendly
Easy to Manage

Auto Repeater has:

great pigment
hind end muscling
wide behind
great profile
good bone
level top-line
beautiful head
correct horns
Excellent bloodlines

Auto does not have the overrall mass, or front end width but between him and Rey he has more of what Pancake needs. **update** This match worked wonderfully. You can see Pancake's twin doelings Summer & Meadow Summer  has a very pretty head, long level topline, straight legs, wide behind. Meadow has her mom's big roman nose, thick bone, wide behind and overrall mass I'm looking for in my doelings.
Pancake's faults:

Cow-hocked
narrow behind
no rear end muscling
ugly head
her back is not level (straight)
Pancake needs to be bred to a buck with:

correct legs
wide behind
lots of rear end muscling
beautiful head
Straight back
thick bone
good overall width
good bone
Wide in front
thickness through the shoulders
decent rear end muscling
wide horn set
balanced doe

**Update** This match produced Curry a very pretty girl, correct legs, balanced and has the length her dam doesn't have and it looks like so far her horns are going to be better shaped than Sage's above.  Her son Trigger Happy Repeater sold at 2 days old for $300 as a buck. I just recently saw Trigger, end of July and he's growing wonderfully and has hind end muscling!!

So this match worked well. I'm hoping bred to Eclipse it will be even better!

Leaning Tree Reanne:
overall mass
additional rear end muscling
front end muscling and width
thick bone
thick through the shoulders
good feminie wedge
thicker through the barrel
wide horn set
correct horns
excellent pigment
great pedigree

**Update** Reanne's twin bucklings were awesome when they were born. Both Sniper & Bullet were very long, had correct horns, level topline, width and good spring of rib. For some reason though they didn't grow. I think they both got a cocci overload and just didn't come out of it.
See Reanne's 2009 Benediction Triplet doelings!
KRC Raffle Ticket to Right:
additional length
some rear end muscling
broad back
wide shoulders
elegant neck
great ennobled blood lines for a % girl
color genetics (dam, Ebony was black)

**update** Raffle had Auto twin bucklings, one, Quinto was awesome. Thick, wide, rear end muscling, thick bone, was even better than Auto and much better than Raffle. He sold as a wether. Her other boy, Scratch, looked more like her with a flat head, thin bones, more lean dairy type. He also sold as a wether.

Unfortunately we lost Chiquita during labor. Her kids were beautiful but didn't make it either.

So what I have done with my doe herd and what I will continue to do through the 2009/2010 season is to make a list of the positives and negatives of each doe. If one doe has more faults or things I do not like than things I do, then she goes up for sale. This could be my best producer!

But ask these questions:

Do her kids excel above the rest?
Are they bigger?
Grow faster?
Are her doelings better than her?
Just because she has triplets doesn't mean she'll make you more money.

If you have to bottle feed one of them, then you are already into it at least $100.   I personally would prefer the doe that consistently throws twins or even singles as long as they are healthy, strong and show a great weight gain.

But if she IS the ugliest goat out there and she does consistently produce top of the notch wethers and doelings, takes care of all of them and has no health issues take a look at her again, maybe she's earning her keep.

Do you have a doeling of hers that is prettier than her that can take her place?

If not, maybe keep her an extra kidding or buy a doe to replace her that is a proven producer. Make sure to see pictures of her previous kids to  know if you like what she has produced so far. Make sure the "replacement" doe fits in with the buck you have. Do not buy a doe that has the same faults as your buck or you will not produce better than what you have. (statistically speaking)
